The insane increase in the overall time people spend online requires that almost all celebrities got to have a carefully-curated public persona, to survive. The tremendous increase in the number of PR agencies is an after-effect of this phenomena, me thinks.
For e.g. If a movie star has a movie release coming up, suddenly you can see articles and posts about “affairs”, “likes”, “temple visits” Etc.
Similarly, if a movie star is accused of something (E.g. Criminal case), suddenly you will see pictures of them visiting religious sites, helping the poor Etc.
Nowadays, there are “Journalists” whose only job is to pore over the Internet and collate Instagram updates of celebrities and then combine them into an “Article”. Height of Journalism!
As far as celebrities are concerned, the fear seems to be whether the fans will forget their existence and move on to other avenues to waste their time.
Adios!
